Former R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe will debut a new solo composition—officially, it’s his first ever, according to a press release—at this year’s Moogfest, which happens May 18–21 in Durham, NC.

The Moog-centric piece is “an exclusive audio-visual installation that will explore desire and movement, showcasing footage [Stipe] shot in New York City,” according to Noisey.

Stipe’s appearance at the North Carolina festival owes, at least in part, to an Athens connection. Last September, Stipe friend and Slingshot Festival founder Kai Riedl announced that he had been hired as Moogfest’s executive producer.

The wide-ranging Slingshot began in 2014 to showcase local, national and international music, tech and art, and has taken place each spring since. Riedl confirms that the event will continue in Athens, but says this year’s installment has been moved to the fall for logistical reasons.

There have been a lot of moving parts, mostly due to me working full time at Moogfest, and it’s pretty full on,” Riedl says.
