Today’s Office Jam! Deerhoof: “The Trouble With Candyhands”

Welcome to Today’s Office Jam!, a new feature where we share a tune the Flagpole office is currently diggin’ on. Today’s jam comes courtesy music editor Gabe Vodicka.

The best thing about “The Trouble With Candyhands,” a track from Deerhoof‘s just-released album Breakup Songs isn’t that it’s a quirky, irresistible, slightly damaged pop song—it’s that all of that is still, after a dozen albums, so Deerhoof. What other band can boast this degree of consistency while working in such a potentially restrictive format?

The cha-cha backbone, the thumping rhythm, the ebullient chorus (“Then you bring me flowers”) that sounds almost like a backhanded diss: it’s all so fresh and so clean and oh so got-damn Deerhoof. Three minutes with these guys goes by way too fast.

Deerhoof plays the Hopscotch Music Festival this Thursday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh, NC. Flagpole will be there! Will you?
