It’s Friday, and that means weekend, and that means lots and lots of great shows. Here’s a new weekly roundup of stuff you should probably check out. Y’know, if you’re into good music. We’re calling it “Don’t Be a Dummy!”
Werewolves, Sea of Dogs, Foozle: Tonight at the 40 Watt, Werewolves celebrate the vinyl release of their album Georgia. That’s reason enough to celebrate, right? The added bonus is Emily Armond’s lovely Sea of Dogs, which is seeing some member shakeup soon (and possibly dissolving completely?). This may be your LAST CHANCE to see the band in its current incarnation, so don’t delay.
Boycycle, Four Eyes, Gypsy Sideshow: Another release show! This time it’s Boycycle, quickly becoming a Flagpole fave, celebrating the release of the new album The Steady Confident Touch of a Man in His Prime.
Universal Boogie Tour: Featuring the anachronistic stylings of Bay Area rapper/graffiti artist Bukue One, this show promises to get you all nostalgic for your parachute pants.
The Viking Progress, Hand Sand Hands: Newly relocated to Athens from Minnesota, Hand Sand Hands should be an exciting addition to our town’s rich history of weirdo-pop. The group’s new Reded EP is a doozy.
Ike Stubblefield and Friends, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Flannel Church: A legendary session player who’s recorded and performed with Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Albert Ayler, BB King, Steely Dan and tons more, Purdie was a funk innovator and is a heck of a drummer. Prior to this show, he’ll be giving a drum clinic at Chick Piano Saturday at 11 a.m. Get schooled!
