Flagpole Premieres: Drí and the Violence, “It’s Love”

Today, Athens’ new dreamy and danceable project Drí and the Violence shares the music video for “It’s Love,” recorded and produced at Ear Bonez Studio. The live studio session’s soft and shimmering aesthetic elevates that of the song, which songwriter, lead vocalist and drummer Adriana Thomas introduces at the beginning of the video as their “most violent” song.

Thomas also performs under Drí as a solo looping act, but Drí and the Violence brings together six musicians who are all accomplished in their own right within the local music scene: Spencer Paul (vocalist, guitar), Matt Calonious (vocalist, keys), Mitchell Cassaday (vocalist, bass guitar), Nicholas Mallis (guitar) and Freeman Leverett (vocalist, auxiliary percussion).

“‘It’s Love’ is a song where romantic love flourishes between two unsuspecting people, despite a bleak reality in which everything is ‘broken’ and out of balance. Originally written to be a protagonist’s love anthem in a sci-fi story I wrote, ‘It’s Love’ romanticizes the initial explosion of intense emotions when two people fall for each other. It purposely dons rose-colored glasses, ignoring the hellscape in which this romance somehow thrives. It’s innocent, fun and a bit naïve. Musically, we explore Latin-American rhythms, harmonically dynamic melodies and endearing harmonies,” says Thomas.

Official Ear Bonez Sessions releases from more of the band’s performances are on the way. Drí and the Violence has also been working hard in the studio and is planning more live shows. In the meantime, you can catch a solo Drí set during PorchFest at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Nighthawks Lounge. Then Drí and the Violence will be performing along the Wild Rumpus parade route Saturday, Oct. 25.
