Flagpole Premieres: Phantom Dan, “FANGS”

Today, emo-tinged pop-punk songwriter Phantom Dan shares the music video for “FANGS,” a freshly released single following his Are You A Phase Of The Dark? EP released this past fall.

Having released numerous music videos under the Phantom Dan moniker, the planning and care that Dan puts into all of the visuals tied to his music is evident. There’s a heavy attention to detail on usage of colors and everything included in a scene in addition to the storyline.

“When I wrote the line ‘You are the haunted house”—which is also a nod to Swear Jar’s lyric ‘I am the haunted house’—immediately I was like, ‘Damn, Manhattan Cafe in Athens would be a sick place to film a video for this.’ It just has such a cool and creepy vibe that totally fits the song. Shout out to the owner Joey and bartender Sam; they hooked it up for us,” says Dan. “From there, each scene that has just me in it is directly related to the lyrics: ‘I hate the sound…’ jukebox behind me. ‘Fogs up the the glass…’ fog on glass. You get it. Only thing is, I didn’t have a snake, so I missed the mark for that line.”

Dan says that writing and planning the scenes for his music videos is his favorite part of the process.

“My wife and I typically write them together, and it’s just a good time. I light a joint, she pours some wine and we just get into it,” says Dan.

“FANGS” has a brief 2:25 minute run-time, and Dan says he’s “all about” writing short songs. He refers to the experience of listening to a good song that reaches that point of “why is it still going?”

“Get in, get out. I think that transposes visually, often, but not always,” says Dan of creating a music video for such a brief song.
