Flagpole Premieres: King David, “Overcome” Video

Gospel hip-hop artist Michael Stovall, who creates under the artist name King David and is one half of the group Brothers N Christ, released a music video today for his single “Overcome.” The track will be featured on an upcoming project titled The Gospel, which is awaiting an official release date for this month.

The Brothers N Christ duo has been busy, currently juggling different projects and premiering a video for “All In His Name” on Flagpole last August. Michael’s brother and other half of Brothers N Christ Rashard Stovall, who goes by IAmGodsChild, released a solo album two months ago, God’s Grace, and wants to work on a group project with a club vibe in a gospel format next. Through all their releases, the brothers maintain a focus on sharing positivity.

When it comes to his approach in creating gospel hip hop, Michael says, “I’ve operated on just a vibe and a feeling. They come just at sporadic moments; a lot of times it’ll be just listening to a track that inspires the creativity. I just let that music and that spirit and that vibe and that word lead me where I need to go.”

One of the inspirations behind this video and track is Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie’s “We Are the World” in the sense that a group of people were able to come together musically to put out a positive message. In addition to the Stovall brothers, also featured on “Overcome” is JR Freesh, Audrey Rucker Bannis, Shawander Hurt and Mr.WhiteDaRealist. The blend of voices and styles compliment each other for a smooth-listening experience that emphasizes personal strength and unity.

Michael says it represents that, “No matter what anybody going through, no matter what your situation is, you got fired from your job or you’re falling on financial times, whatever you might be facing, anything can be overcome. All you have to do is stay focused and know that there’s a bigger thing working, and it’ll all come together.”

Despite knowing each other for a long time, this is the first collaboration between King David and Mr. White. However, they both expressed that this felt like the right moment. Mr. White, who runs a podcast under that name out of Creative Space and releases music under the moniker Mr.WhiteDaRealist, delivered his contribution to the track from a slightly different angle.

“I just feel that I brought a different eye, a different point of view. They do gospel hip hop, I’m in my own lane. I basically just make uplifting music. I used to make gospel music, but I let that go. I used to make gangster music before I started making gospel, but I let that go. Now I’m just doing things for… what he said, overcome. I make uplifting music so people can get through their day cause there’s enough hate out there,” says Mr. White. “I’m your average Joe, trying to do the next right thing.”
