Celebrate 4/20 with the premiere of “Pastel Houses,” the folksy, grungy opening track and lead single from CannonandtheBoxes’ upcoming record, The Wonder Years (B-Sides). Set to be released on May 7, the 11-track album will be a curated selection of tape demos, live recordings and previously passed over songs from the past few years.
“This song in particular stood out to us as a really interesting example of what live music has meant during the pandemic, as ‘Pastel Houses’ was written, recorded and then performed after shows ceased to exist,” says singer-songwriter Cannon Rogers. “Working on the video for this song, we wanted to play a fully live take with a one-camera, no cut style, and the energy that we managed to catch with that group was the closest I’d felt to being back on stage in nearly a year.”
For “Pastel Houses,” bandmates Rogers, Hayden Johnson, Jordi Lara and Will Ruff were joined by Tommy Trautwein of Well Kept on guitar and backing vocals, as well as Jessica Thompson of Hotel Fiction on bass. The song was tracked live at We Bought a Zoo Records.

An album release show will be held with Annie Leeth and Aldente on May 14 at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta. “It will be our first show in 401 days, which is absolutely insane and terrifying and exhilarating,” says Rogers.
