Athens Bars Are Open for Super Bowl Sunday

Ordinarily, only establishments that serve food are allowed to serve alcohol on Sundays in Georgia. But due to a quirk in state law, local governments can choose one Sunday per year when bars are allowed to open. This year, the Athens-Clarke County Commission chose today, Super Bowl Sunday.

The exception stems from a request by Savannah to let bars open when St. Patrick’s Day—a major holiday there, with a parade that draws people from all over the East Coast—falls on a Sunday. But cities and counties can choose another Sunday, and at various times ACC has chosen New Year’s Eve or Cinco de Mayo, as well, after polling bar owners on their preference.

So, there are plenty of options to choose from to watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philly Dawgs in Super Bowl LIX. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. on Fox, with Kendrick Lamar providing halftime entertainment.
