The University of Georgia and Clarke County School District have both canceled in-person classes and other events on Wednesday as snow started to blanket Athens on Tuesday afternoon.
“Due to the current snowfall and the forecast for very cold temperatures overnight and throughout tomorrow, all CCSD schools and district offices will be closed Wednesday, January 22,” CCSD announced. “Schools will have a remote learning day (asynchronous instruction), and individual schools will provide families with additional information about student work expectations for the day. In addition, all after school and extracurricular activities and programming will be canceled for the day.”
At UGA:
Faculty members are expected to ensure continuity of instruction by making up for the missed material through alternative means. This may include online lectures, readings, assignments, or other instructional activities, which are clearly communicated to students.
Essential personnel—employees who have been identified by their department or unit as critical to the maintenance and operations of the University, particularly providing essential support to students—are expected to report on time unless conditions prevent safe travel. Essential personnel should contact their supervisors for additional information.
All UGA residence halls will remain open. For on-campus residents in University Housing, please contact your community front desk or RA with any questions or concerns. If you become aware of any facilities-related problems, please report them.
All dining halls are scheduled to open at 8 a.m., but opening could be adjusted if weather conditions warrant. Campus Transit service has been suspended at present but will resume on Wednesday when weather conditions make it safe to do so.
Tuesday nights’ Athens-Clarke County Commission meeting was moved to Thursday at 6 p.m. The county courthouse will open at 10 a.m. Athens Transit will also start running at 10 a.m. The county animal shelter will open at 11 a.m. Trash pickup will be determined by Wednesday’s weather conditions.
