A Texas man killed at least 10 people early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, where many UGA students and other Bulldog fans are gathered to watch Georgia play Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff.
According to a statement from UGA President Jere Morehead, a UGA student was among the 25 people who were seriously injured in the attack.
The suspect in the attack, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, drove around a police barricade and ran over several people, then opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle on a crowd of New Year’s Eve revelers, the Associated Press reported. Louisiana police said they found guns and pipe bombs in the truck, as well as an Islamic State flag. (Jabbar was a U.S.-born citizen.) Authorities said several accomplices planted explosive devices around the French Quarter, and the FBI is investigating the murder spree as a potential terror attack.
Jabbar was killed in a shootout with a police. Two officers were wounded.
Jabbar previously lived in Marietta and graduated from Georgia State University in 2017, the AJC reported.
The Sugar Bowl, originally scheduled for 8:45 p.m. today, has been postponed until Thursday, according to ESPN. A time has not been announced.
