Three Democratic candidates for Athens-area Georgia House of Representatives seats were among dozens who signed a letter asking for U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams’ resignation as chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia.
The signees cited electoral backsliding in 2024, as well as Williams’ split responsibilities as party chair and a member of Congress: “Simply put, members of Congress shouldn’t be leading state parties of battleground states, especially if they spend more time campaigning in their solid blue district than leading the party in every region of our state.”
The letter is signed by Eric Gisler, Melanie Miller and Andrew Ferguson, who all lost their races to incumbent Republicans in the Athens area last week.
Williams has served as state party chair since 2019.
“We’ve made tremendous strides. Do we still have more work to do? Absolutely. Are there things that we should have done differently? Absolutely,” she said in response. “But we are continuing to move the needle forward.”
