Georgia Democrats Thank Biden, Coalesce Around Kamala Harris

Athens and Georgia Democrats believe it was the right move for President Joe Biden to announce Sunday that he would not seek re-election. Many also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Here are some reactions:

10th Congressional District candidate Lexy Doherty:

“I want to thank President Joe Biden for his five decades of public service, culminating in his remarkably successful time as president. In just a single term in the White House, President Biden delivered the most successful presidency in my lifetime, shepherding landmark legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law.

“The stakes of this election are immeasurably high, and Biden’s decision to pass the torch puts the party and country in a better position to secure the gains made under his leadership and preserve our democracy against those who would wish to end it. I am filled with hope for our future under a new generation of leaders. We inherit a direction toward a better future for working families, and we vow to honor it with our own tireless work for America.”

Sen. Jon Ossoff:

Rep. Nikema Williams, chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia:

“We thank President Joe Biden for his decades of public service. For the past three and a half years, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have led our country’s recovery from a global pandemic and made investments that have already created 30,000 new jobs in Georgia.

President Biden said Georgia made him president, and he’s right. There is more work to be done. Our eyes are on the prize.

We must defeat the twice-impeached, failed, 34-time convicted felon Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.

We stand firmly behind Vice President Harris to make it happen.”
