San Angel Cocina and Cantina, in the former Applebee’s on Broad Street and brought to you by the restaurant group behind Lalo’s in Wire Park and what was Los Primos on 441-S (recently rebranded as La Laguna Taqueria Express under new ownership), is open. For now, the menu is limited.
Also newly open as of today and therefore also beating Athens Bagel Co. is Mitti Desi Cuisine on South Milledge Avenue, next to Achachi Market.
You have one more week to go to Jason’s Deli, which closes May 17 to make way for a First Watch as fast-casual breakfast becomes the next bubble tea. Along the same lines, Metro Diner, a franchise whose original location is in Jacksonville, FL, is moving into the space vacated by the Hardee’s in front of Target. Metro Diner doesn’t just do breakfast, but it does a lot of it.
G Brand BBQ, the original location of which is in Crawford, has opened a second branch on Hog Mountain Road in Watkinsville, in the same mini strip mall as Rosie’s Hometown Meats.
Small Cakes Athens, a cupcakery and creamery that is a branch of a franchise that has appeared on “Cupcake Wars” several times, has opened in Bogart on Malcom Bridge Road. It’s open 10 a.m.–6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturdays, and offers online ordering for cupcakes, cake pops, cookie sandwiches, brownies and dog treats. The store also offers ice cream.
Speaking of online ordering, Birdie’s, on Prince Avenue, has added it for lunch. Pick up your orders at the back entrance, on Hill Street.
Bento Stop, offering Korean fried chicken and tteokbokki (addictive cylindrical chewy rice cakes cooked in a spicy red sauce that are a popular Korean snack), is open on Clayton Street downtown, in the parking deck that also contains Waffle House.
Killer Crust Pizza, brought to you by some of the folks from the now closed Doughby’s in Watkinsville, will open in the space vacated by Charlie Grainger’s on Epps Bridge Parkway, in Oconee County.
