Athens-Clarke County Seeks Input on Future Development

Over the next six weeks, Athens-Clarke County will be gathering public input on a new future land use map that will guide growth for the next 20 years—a period when the city is expected to add about 30,000 new residents.

A preliminary version of the map presented to ACC commissioners last fall focused on “nodes,” mostly at major intersections, where more density will be encouraged, such as downtown, the Georgia Square Mall area, Normaltown, Beechwood and the Highway 29 Kroger areas.

As planners develop a more detailed map and comprehensive plan, eight public hearings are scheduled for March and April:

  • Thursday, Mar. 21 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Athens Technical College.
  • Tuesday, Mar. 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Creature Comforts.
  • Wednesday, Mar. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Whitehead Road Elementary.
  • Thursday, Mar. 28 from 6-8 p.m. at Fowler Drive Elementary.
  • Wednesday, Apr. 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hilsman Middle.
  • Thursday, Apr. 11 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Heard Park community center.
  • Monday, Apr. 15 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the ACC Extension Office.
  • Thursday, Apr. 18 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the ACC Library.

Spanish interpreters will be available at the Whitehead Road and Fowler Drive events.

Residents can also fill out an online survey through Apr. 30.

The local government is also seeking input on the location of a new Eastside fire station, a 25-year regional transportation plan and infrastructure for Lexington Road.
