Athens-Clarke County police are offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a 3-year-old at the Hallmark Mobile Home Park on Spring Valley Road.

The suspects are Dakious Echols, 18, and Desmontrez Mathis, 22, both of Athens. Police asked anyone who knows where they are to contact Detective Johnson at 762-400-7060 or [email protected].

The child, Kyron Zarco-Smith, was killed during a shooting last Friday while he was watching television with his older brother. The brother was injured and treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.

“I am sickened by this heinous crime, and my heart aches for the grieving family, friends and loved ones who are suffering such a tragic loss,” ACCPD Chief of Police Jerry Saulters said in a news release. “The Athens-Clarke County Police Department will dedicate our full strength and resources to bring the killers to justice.”

Friday, police arrested Julian Cubillos, 17, of Lawrenceville, and charged him with malice murder, felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and violating the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Jayden Brown, 16, of Athens, was arrested Wednesday on the same charges. Warrants have been issued for Echols and Mathis on those charges as well.

Cedar Shoals High School has tightened security because Brown and Echols were formerly students there.
