The woman who was killed while jogging at UGA’s intramural fields on Thursday has been identified as Laken Riley, a student in Augusta University’s nursing program in Athens.
Thursday night, UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark said that the then-unnamed victim was not a UGA student, but was enrolled in another school. Later that night, Augusta University identified her as a student there. Riley’s name was not revealed until Friday, when her family was notified of her death.
Riley attended UGA through the spring of 2023, then transferred to Augusta University, which offers nursing classes in Athens. The 22-year-old from Woodstock, GA was a member of UGA’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Meanwhile, UGA said Friday afternoon that campus police “have identified a person of interest who is being questioned.
“We want to stress that this continues to be an active, ongoing investigation, and we will provide further updates when circumstances warrant.”
Riley’s body was found in the woods near Lake Herrick Thursday after a friend called police worried that she hadn’t come back from a jogging trip.
This post has been updated to correct details about Augusta University’s nursing program.
