A woman was found dead in the woods at UGA’s Intramural Fields on Thursday, which along with the unrelated death of a dorm resident just hours earlier prompted the university to cancel classes Thursday night and Friday.

At about noon Thursday, UGA police received a call from a person who was worried that a friend had gone jogging at the Intramural Fields and not returned. Police searched the area and, about half an hour later, found the woman dead on the scene with visible injuries. “Foul play is suspected,” UGA administrators said.

Athens-Clarke County police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting UGAPD. Anyone who may have information is asked to call 706-542-2200.

“The past 24 hours have been a traumatic time for our University,” the administration said in a statement. “Our student body is grieving the sudden death of one our students in Brumby Hall last night.  And as we continue to mourn that tragic loss of life, today’s devastating news will uniquely test the resolve of our campus community, particularly our students.”

Neither UGA nor police have released the names of the deceased.

Resources available to assist students in processing their emotions include Student Care and Outreach (sco@uga.edu, 706-542-8479) and Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), which has a 24/7 hotline at 706-542-2273.

Classes will resume on Monday, the university said.
