Clarke Schools Delay Opening Wednesday, Shelter Beds Added Due to Freeze

Clarke County public schools will open two hours late on Wednesday morning as temperatures are expected to fall into the teens overnight.

Elementary schools will start at 9:40 a.m., while middle and high schools will start at 10:30 a.m. Bus pickups will be two hours later than usual. District offices will open at 10 a.m.

UGA has made no announcement about delaying or canceling classes.

The Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department is working with community partners to provide emergency shelter. As part of a “Tier 1 response” for temperatures below 35-40 degrees but above single digits, the Salvation Army of Athens Center of Hope on Hawthorne Avenue and the Bigger Vision of Athens shelter on North Avenue have added additional beds on a space-available basis.

ACC has also posted information about preventing pipes from freezing and other cold-weather preparations on its website.
