Cheba Hut Is Opening Downtown Monday and More Food News

Cheba Hut, the cannabis-themed sub restaurant that announced it would open a location in Athens all the way back in 2019, will open for real this Monday, Oct. 23 in the Washington Street parking deck mixed-use building downtown—the space vacated by The Office. The menu includes toasted subs, salads, Rice Krispie treats, meatballs with sauce, French onion soup and a full bar.

Zombie Coffee and Donuts, downtown on Broad Street, has closed after a sign in its window offering the business for sale appears not to have panned out. Philanthropy Fresh, a restaurant that bills itself as a café and grill, is moving from Loganville into the space. If the menu is similar to what it was previously, it’ll do bowls, wraps, burgers and quesadillas.

Doughby’s, in Watkinsville, has closed permanently, as has the Sabor Latino location on Oglethorpe Avenue. The Watkinsville location of the latter, in front of the Hog Mountain Road Publix, remains open under new ownership (hooray!). The Oglethorpe building looks like it’ll become Flama Brazilian Steakhouse under the same ownership, according to the paint on the windows.

The event space at 100 Prince, formerly the chapel of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, can be rented most days, but on home game days it turns into Pints on Prince, a pop-up in connection with Trappeze offering small plates, burgers and sandwiches, and a selection of local beers, house wines, liquor and cocktails. Hours vary depending on game time, and you can see them and make reservations here.

Jim ‘n Nick’s, a barbecue chain with 47 locations, is open in Oconee County on the Oconee Connector, near the Vitamin Shoppe.

Starland Lounge and Lanes, downtown, which was a pizza place and most recently has been purely a bar/duckpin bowling alley, now has food again, kind of, out of a pop-up that serves burgers and such out of a window at the front to satisfy late-night cravings.

Did we say Frank & Sons, the steakhouse from the folks behind Punta Cana, is officially open? It is. Ditto for El Paso Tacos & Tequila, in what was Iron Factory on Washington Street downtown. Cafe Racer on Broad Street is slowly rolling out its dinner menu in the evenings. Veronica’s Sweet Spot, in the Tracy Street warehouses, has closed. C & C Cafe and Produce, in Winterville, is still doing pop-ups in other location, but its main one is no longer. And Mama’s Boy’s mini version of itself, in the Wire Park food hall in Watkinsville, is open.
