The intersection of Broad and Lumpkin streets, where the University of Georgia campus meets downtown Athens, was officially named for Vince Dooley during a private ceremony on Monday.
Among those in attendance were the legendary coach’s widow, Barbara Dooley, Gov. Brian Kemp, Mayor Kelly Girtz and state Rep. Houston Gaines (R-Athens).
Dooley, who died last year, led the Bulldogs to a 201-77-10 record during his 25 seasons as head football coach, and a national championship in 1980. He retired from coaching in 1988, but continued to serve as athletic director until 2004.
