Nighthawks Lounge Is Open, Maepole Opens New Location and More Food News

Nighthawks Lounge, the most recent project from Jerry and Krista Slater (of the Expat, the Lark Winespace and Slater’s Steakhouse), opened Tuesday, July 26, in Newtown at 175 Tracy St. In addition to cocktails (the Slaters’ particular passion), it also serves what its owners call “grandpa snacks”: an upscale bologna sandwich, pimento cheese, tinned fish, salted peanuts and other tasty salt bombs. Flat Circle Pizza will also be popping up at Nighthawks.

Vickie Shell, the mother of Lil Ice Cream Dude Beau Shell and as much a part of the success of that business as Beau since its earliest days, has been diagnosed with brain cancer, meaning the business has been closed from time to time and missed many of the summer events that help it pay its bills. The family recently started a GoFundMe to help pay for an experimental treatment and related expenses. Click here to read more and contribute.

The Oconee County location of Maepole is open, in the Trader Joe’s shopping center on Epps Bridge Pkwy. Nearby, in a new building going up, will be a location of barbecue chain Jim N Nick’s.

James Beard nominee Steven Grubbs and friend Laura Grenier have started a wine club of sorts called Rising Tides. There’s no subscription fee. You just sign up to get emails or follow Rising Tides on Instagram to see limited-time offers. Pull the trigger quickly and pick up at The Old Pal.

The original location of Cafe Racer, in Crawford/Arnoldsville, is temporarily closed while the new Broad Street location gets ready to open. No, I don’t know when opening day is anymore than you do.
