The Athens-Clarke County Library’s main branch on Baxter Street is closed indefinitely after bedbugs were discovered.

The bedbugs were found in a chair on the second floor. The library closed early on Thursday, Sept. 29, and remains closed today. Staff has contacted a pest control vendor, according to a library news release.

Online resources are available at athenslibrary.org, and the library’s other branches remain open. The Fall Book Sale will resume once the main library reopens.

UPDATE: Library officials said Monday that, after treatment for bedbugs, the library will reopen on Sunday, Oct. 9.

“The health and safety of our library visitors and staff are our highest priority,” Athens Regional Library System Executive Director Valerie Bell said in a news release. “We want to be as thorough as possible to effectively eliminate the issue, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Holds will be extended, and no fines will be accrued during this time for late materials that were checked out from the Baxter Street location.
