A production studio that broke ground in Athens last November will be larger than initially expected.
Athena Studios has bought an additional 65 acres for back lots and stage space to add to its 45-acre site off Athena Drive in an industrial part of East Athens, WSB radio reported.
Developer Joel Harber said last year that the 350,000 square-foot studio’s first phase would be completed in November 2022, with the whole project taking about two years to build out. The studio—a collaboration with the University of Georgia’s film program—will allow entire productions to take place in Athens, from script writing to editing and CGI.
Drawn by generous tax credits, the 412 productions filmed in Georgia during fiscal 2022 spent a total of $4.4 billion in the state, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
