Surcheros Opening on Baxter Street Next Week

Surcheros, a health-oriented, Mexicanish franchise, will open Aug. 1 at 700 Baxter Street, in the same building as Newk’s and Slutty Vegan. If you’ve driven to south Georgia or to Florida over the past year or so, you’ve likely seen a lot of billboards for its locations in that area, and it’s continuing to expand. You can expect a bunch of grand opening hoo-ha next week, likely to be posted at the Athens location’s Facebook page.

Sellers Eatery, an offshoot of a restaurant in Rome, GA, is open in Watkinsville at 18 Barnett Shoals Road, where Jacob’s Pizza used to be. It does mostly sandwiches for lunch—including one called “the MAGA” (ham, turkey, Swiss, onions, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and basil pesto mayonnaise; no ketchup)—has a salad bar and is working on adding breakfast.

Oak House Distillery, at 1015 Macon Highway in a big old historic house near the Oconee County Mama’s Boy, plans to open in September with housemade gin, vodka and rum available in a tasting room and ample outdoor space.

Comer Coffee Co. has been popping up in the teeny OK Coffee space next to Wuxtry on College Avenue downtown, slinging beans, coffee drinks, non-coffee drinks like fancy lemonade and horchata, and donuts from Café Racer. Check the Instagram for details on dates and hours.

Both Lickin’ Chicken, on Oconee Street, and Scoville Hot Chicken, downtown, have closed.
