Bennie Coleman III Drops Out of Athens Mayor’s Race

Mayoral candidate Bennie Coleman III has withdrawn from the Athens-Clarke County mayoral race just three weeks before Election Day.

Coleman, a retiree and political newcomer, said he is dealing with some health issues, and that he was dissatisfied with the questions he received at candidate forums.

“The questions they ask you, it’s not really to help people,” he told Flagpole. “It’s to help whoever the group is that put the question out.”

Coleman officially withdrew on Monday. Because it’s so late in the race—early and absentee voting have already begun—his name will still appear on the ballot, but signs will be posted at polling places notifying voters that votes for Coleman will not count, according to the ACC Board of Elections office.
