UGA Had at Least 821 COVID-19 Cases Last Week

The number of COVID-19 positives at UGA has grown more than tenfold since the university started testing students, faculty and staff in mid-August.

UGA reported 821 positive tests for the week of Aug. 24-30, including 798 students and 23 employees. That’s up from from 189 the week of Aug. 17-23 and 64 the week of Aug. 10-16.

It’s not because UGA is doing more testing, either. The rate of positive tests conducted on campus has gone from 0.38% to 2.35% to 5.36%.

The numbers are most likely low. Only tests done on campus are guaranteed to be included. Not every student is using DawgCheck, the university’s app for self-reporting COVID-19 symptoms and test results.

UGA President Jere Morehead issued a statement telling students to shape up.

On Monday, Athens-Clarke County topped 3,000 cases of COVID-19.
