A Socially Distanced Star-Spangled Classic Is Scheduled for July 3

Athens-Clarke County’s annual fireworks display will be launched from Ben Epps Airport this year.

County officials are urging residents to treat the spectacle as a drive-in event. Limited parking is available at the airport and Satterfield Park, and there are several shopping centers with good vantage points. Observers should not park on the side of the road. Tune into Bulldog 93.3 FM for traffic updates.

The show will start at approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 3.

“In the midst of this unprecedented time, we are excited to provide this opportunity for the community to safely celebrate Independence Day in a unique way,” Leisure Services Director Kent Kilpatrick said. “Our staff has worked to determine a launch location that will allow for outstanding viewing and social distancing. I look forward to continuing the tradition of the Star Spangled Classic.”

The fireworks display has been launched from the Classic Center in recent years, and previously was held at Georgia Square Mall and Bishop Park.
