Murray Attaway has returned to music after a long silence with a record called Tense Music Plays, his first solo album in three decades. Though a native of Marietta, Attaway has strong roots in Athens; he is best known for his work in the ‘80s with indie rock band Guadalcanal Diary, which he co-founded with Jeff Walls. After releasing its critically lauded first EP, Watusi Rodeo, the band became increasingly affiliated with the Athens music scene, making it a contemporary of other local giants like R.E.M. and the B-52s. Attaway’s solo music honors Guadalcanal Diary’s musical roots while exploring his wide-ranging interests, from American cultural imperialism to the supernatural. He will be celebrating its release with a show featuring opener Clay Harper, a musician known for his work as the frontman of The Coolies.
