The works of Athens-born artist, illustrator and art educator R.B. Pruett undergo a process of cannibalization to reach their final forms, each being composed of cut up and repurposed paintings. This process of collage and distortion results in fragmented subjects whose eyes, noses and profiles have no rightful place, Pruett’s own take on Cubism. According to Pruett, the “works allude to the beauty of decay, to violation, and vulnerability.” He finds that his concern with the human condition and sociopolitical issues and his quest for self-identity guide his work, as well as the race relations and stereotypes present in American culture. Pruett wrote a thesis on his “cannibalistic” artmaking process that was published in 2009 titled “Cannibalism: A Failure to Be Satisfied,” in which he explains how it results in a feeling of instant gratification as he creates. This will be his first solo exhibition with ATHICA.
