In “Fission, or Eclipse,” New York-based artist Rose Salane brings together a variety of objects to represent tumultuous historical shifts. For this exhibition, Salane collected items from a variety of archives, including the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at UGA, the Atlanta History Center and the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. Among the items are diary entries describing an eclipse during the Civil War, a letter from Albert Einstein asking for funding for nuclear fission and atomic energy research, and decommissioned traffic light lenses. Objects in the exhibition are given voices that tell audiences about the intersections of war, observation and power, lending even mundane objects the power of preservation. Salane will give a lecture on Sept. 11 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at 5:30 p.m. in auditorium S151, followed by the opening of her exhibition at The Athenaeum on Sept. 12 from 6–8 p.m. “Fission, or Eclipse” will be on display through Nov. 23.
