Calendar Pick: Mark Clegg Author Talk

The Crimson and Gold: Football and Integration in Athens, Georgia chronicles the struggle as two Athens high schools merged in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. It follows the schools’ highly competitive football programs and how their coming together was linked to the larger battle for equal rights. In addition to sharing the well-known stories of integration in Georgia, author Mark Clegg also covers the “Freedom of Choice” transfers, the violence of the local chapter of the KKK, Athens High’s football state title run in its final year of existence and more. Clegg interviewed a number of individuals from this era while writing the book, such as three of the first five Black UGA football players and Flagpole’s own Pete McCommons. Mark Clegg is from Atlanta and has published two other books in addition to his work in financial services and his co-owned antique store. After his discussion of The Crimson and Gold, he will hold a book signing.
