Though best known for his work in legendary Athens-based band Drive-By Truckers, Patterson Hood’s solo project is defined by its more intimate, personal nature. His lyrics cover his experiences living in the South, resulting in politically-tinged pop and folk reflections rather than the rock stylings of the Truckers. The literary leanings of Hood’s solo music extend to other parts of his career, as well, where he has written for publications like The New York Times and American Songwriter and authored his first short story, which was featured in a crime fiction anthology. His 2012 album, Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance, even began as an idea for a semi-autobiographical book, but ended up turning into a collection of over 500 songs pared down into what he calls “the most intimate and personal record of [his] career.”
