Calendar Pick: Linnentown Quilt Project

The destruction of the Linnentown neighborhood on Baxter Street to make way for UGA residence halls in 1962 has initiated larger conversations in recent years. After hearing Hattie Thomas Whitehead’s account of being forced out of her family home, three art education graduate students at UGA began the Linentown Quilt Project to honor the memories and stories of first descendants. The quilt is on display with a tour led by Gabriella Victorio focusing on works of art centered on community and Lou Stovall’s exhibition. Master printmaker Stovall lived in the Linnentown area as a child, and his works are inspired by his life, nature and his poetic meditations. His exhibition, “Of Land and Origins,” is on display through Sunday, May 29.
