Shawnya Harris, the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art, will lead a Tour at Two of the museum’s new exhibition, “Kevin Cole: Soul Ties.” Cole, an Atlanta-based painter and mixed-media artist, has created over 35 public art commissions over the years, including the Coca-Cola Centennial Olympic Mural for the 1996 Olympic games and a 55-foot-long installation at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2018. Many of his three-dimensional wood and metal constructions use a necktie as a motif, alluding to the history of African-American suffrage, while others vibrate with the improvisational energy of jazz and blues.
