Fans of David Hale’s popular “Birdsong” mural, a flock of 20 species of local songbirds commissioned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the AthFest Music and Arts Festival, should take note of “Birds of Heaven,” the artist’s latest contribution to Athens’ growing population of outdoor murals. Located near the hospital’s emergency department, the mural was commissioned by St. Mary’s Health Care System to lift the spirits of patients and specialists alike. Slightly straying away from his traditional red and black palette, Hale painted blue and black birds flying among red, pink and green trees in his signature style that emphasizes geometric forms and bold line work.
