Central to Their Lives

“Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists in the Johnson Collection” focuses on the achievements of several women artists working between the late 1890s and early 1960s. Living in a traditionally conservative region while many social and cultural roles were in flux, these women faced complex challenges not limited to gender norms, educational barriers and racial tensions. Consisting of paintings, drawings and sculptures, the exhibition includes works by Kate Freeman Clark, Minnie Evans, Anne Goldthwaite, Ella Sophonisba Hergesheimer, Clementine Hunter, Nell Choate Jones, Alma Thomas, Mary Leath Thomas and Elizabeth O’Neill Verner. “Central to Their Lives” will remain on view through Sept. 23.
