Local nonprofit 86 Hate is hosting a pop-up dinner/benefit tonight (Monday, June 18) at 7 p.m. at The Old Pal, which is also launching its summer cocktail menu. 86 Hate focuses on helping service industry workers in Athens advocate for their rights, fight sexual assault and sexual harassment, deal with mental health issues and more. This pop-up specifically raises money for the organization’s efforts to support service workers dealing with sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. Chef Garrett MacFalda (of Heirloom) is offering six small plates of local produce and ingredients priced at $7–$12.
UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is hosting a corn boil and farm tour on June 26 from 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at the J. Phil Campbell Research and Education Center, in Watkinsville. If you’re interested in the future of food, mark your calendars for August 13–15, when the North American Coalition for Insect Agriculture (NACIA) will host its 2018 International Conference, Eating Insects Athens, at the UGA Hotel and Conference Center.
Eating Insects Athens (EIA) will build on the momentum of Eating Insects Detroit (2016) by bringing together global experts and leaders in the edible insect movement from industry, academia, government, cultural adoption, and more. This three day conference will include exciting presentations on research and industry progress, an expo, art exhibits, several opportunities to eat insects, as well as opportunities for networking and collaborating.
