Akademia Brewing Co. Has an Opening Date Set, and More Food Events

Akademia Brewing Co. has been hard at work for a while on its beers (which it was making at Southern Brewing Co.) and its building, the former Musician’s Warehouse by what is now the Atlanta Highway Goodwill. (Technically, the address is 150 Crane Dr.) The original projected date for opening was “late summer,” and these days, mid-October totally counts.

Although Josh Aaron of the Savory Spoon is no longer on board (he’s cooking at Chops & Hops, in Watkinsville), Akademia will still have a restaurant as well as its beer. Opening day is Monday, Oct. 16, and more updates should be posted on the Facebook event.

Coming up the week before that is the annual Autumn Harvest Feast, on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m., which benefits the Athens Farmers Market’s SNAP doubling program. Chefs from Heirloom, The National, The Comerian, Five & Ten, Viva, Holy Crepe, Dolce Vita, Sweet Beijos, Donna Chang’s, Just Bakery, Pulaski Heights BBQ, The Pine, home.made, The Graduate, Chops & Hops and Taqueria Del Sol will be on hand. Tickets are $90 and can be purchased online.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, Avid Bookshop and the UGA Press are teaming up on a book signing/bar crawl with Jerry Slater, co-author of The Southern Foodways Alliance Guide to Cocktails and late of One Harper Station, in Atlanta. Snacks, drinks and books, all together. The Facebook event will be updated with participating bars, at which Avid will sell books.

On Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m., Hugh Acheson will be at the Five Points Avid, signing his brand new cookbook, The Chef and the Slow Cooker, and doing a (presumably not too slow) cooking demonstration.

This weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m., the West Broad Farmers Market is hosting a Hispanic Heritage Celebration that includes a free taco bar by La Parrilla.
