As part of her fundraising for Project Safe’s Dancing With the Athens Stars, Airee Edwards (seen above with her Team 6 partner) has teamed up with Peter Dale of The National to offer Blue Apron-type meal kits, available for a limited time. As the saying goes, give the man a fish cooked by Peter Dale, he’ll eat for a day; buy the man a meal kit that teaches him how to cook like Peter Dale, and he might actually learn something.
Boxes cost $30, feed two people and include the ingredients and instructions to make braised chicken with tomatoes and peppers, slaw of local greens and creamy Red Mule polenta. You can pre-order one here and pick it up at The National on Monday, Mar. 20 from 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
Cinnaholic, downtown in the Georgia Heights Building, on Broad Street, is having a grand opening event on Thursday, Mar. 23 that features BOGO cinnamon rolls for the first 40 customers, plus drawings for free rolls throughout the day.
1000 Faces Coffee is organizing its annual cold-brew coffee cocktail competition (“Shakedown”) at Five Bar on Thursday, Mar. 16 from 5–7 p.m. A fee of $10 gets you a beverage from each competitor and a vote for the winner.
The local coffee-roasting company is also continuing its monthly partnership with Farm Cart, Biscuits & Coffee Love, on Sunday, Mar. 26 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., in the parking lot on Barber. Ten percent of proceeds go to a local cause, and this month it’s Athensmade, which promotes local products.
If you want cocktails without the caffeine, the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition is hosting an event called Cócteles for Community at The Old Pal on Wednesday, Mar. 22 from 4–9 p.m. It serves as a fundraiser for Community Support for Families in Crisis Due to Deportation, and highlights tequila and mezcal. A portion of sales and all gratuities (so tip well) go to that cause.
The Richard B. Russell Library’s third annual School Lunch Challenge takes place Saturday, Mar. 18 at noon at Whitehead Road Elementary School. Last Resort Grill, The Place, Taqueria del Sol and a team of Clarke County School District family and consumer science teachers will compete to make a delicious meal that meets USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program. CCSD students will vote on the winning team, whose meal will be served in cafeterias during the next school year. Tickets are free but limited, so you must register in advance.
