April is probably still tops when it comes to scheduling food events, as it combines beautiful weather with a lack of football competition, but October is pretty dang crazy too. Here’s some of what’s coming up (click here for previous coverage of some other October food events that are taking place this weekend):
- The Athens Area Homeless Shelter is running its annual Culinary Catch-All raffle through Nov. 4, when a winner will be drawn at the Harvest for the Homeless event at the Classic Center (which has $50 tickets for sale now). Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20, and enter you in a drawing to win more than $1,700 in gift certificates to Athens restaurants, funding your eating out for a year. Participating restaurants include: The National, Seabear, Last Resort, Heirloom, 5 & 10, Cali n Tito’s, Barberito’s, Mama’s Boy, Taziki’s, Ike and Jane, Pulaski Heights BBQ, Marker 7 Coastal Grill, home.made, Trappeze, Highwire, Saucehouse, Dondero’s, Earthfare, DePalmas, Jittery Joe’s, Little City Diner, The Branded Butcher, Ideal Bagel, The World Famous, Automatic Pizza, Big City Bread and more. You can buy them online at the link and you don’t need to be present at the event to win.
- Creature Comforts is partering with The National for a vegan beer dinner October 16 at 6:30 p.m. Nine dishes, four courses, plus the brewery’s new beer Epicurious, for $55. Tickets available online.
- The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, in Madison, Georgia, will host its Taps and Tapas event this Saturday at 5 p.m., with a chef from Ford Fry’s empire in Atlanta. Tickets are $25, and entitle you to food, craft beer pairings and live music.
- The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) will hold is annual Fall Wine Fest on Sunday from 3–6 p.m. at Ashford Manor, in Watkinsville. Tickets are $45 in advance for OCAF members, $50 for non-members, $55 day of, and get you tastes of wine from seven regional wineries and bottle shops, beer from four local breweries and food from 26 restaurants. - Food trucks return to the Jittery Joe’s Roaster on Barber Street on Oct. 12 from 6–9 p.m., with 10 percent of sales going to Interfaith Hospitality Network.
- Among the many chili cook-offs, the one to be held at Creature Comforts on Oct. 15 from 1–4 p.m. stands out because of its horror movie theme. It’s being held in conjunction with Cine’s annual Schlocktoberfest and submissions should be inspired by the films.
