Lay-Z Shopper Opens R.U. Hungry Downtown

Well, R.U.?

You may know Lay-Z Shopper best for its late-night world, but the convenience store on Clayton Street downtown has always made some excellent deli sandwiches. Now, its owners have taken over the former Volstead, next door, and opened R.U. Hungry, which offers an expanded range of sandwiches hot and cold, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, pizza and some sides.

Some are standards (club sandwich, grilled cheese with or without bacon, Philly cheese steak). Others are more innovative, like the R.U. Hungry Fat Cat, which combines two cheeseburgers, gyro meat, french fries, white sauce, hot sauce, mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato and onions (somehow for only $6.95). The presence of a sandwich called the Fat Bitch (a whole section of the menu is designated “Fat”) is possibly an ill-considered idea.

Meats and cheeses are still from Boar’s Head, and vegetarians can get a veggie burger, a spinach pie, a veggie sub, falafel or a hummus sandwich, as well as many of the pizza choices.

The convenience store will no longer make sandwiches, but the deli will keep the same kind of late hours (10 a.m.–4 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m.–5 a.m. Friday and Saturday).
