A clever alternative to celebrating Halloween within the parameters of social distancing, the inaugural Athens Halloween Car Rally will be a moving display of decorated vehicles on Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. Anyone can participate in the Athens Halloween Car Rally. Channel that pent up creativity from lack of trick-or-treating and parading into tricking out your vehicle with water-based paints, battery-operated LED lighting, papier-mâché creations, costumed passengers or other spooky props.
There’s no registration fee or forms to fill out—simply show at the far back of the Greenway parking lot across from Chicopee Dudley Complex on East Broad Street ready to roll at 4:30 p.m. Following any last-minute decoration adjustments or questions, the cars will start their engines for an approximately 40-minute lap (directions provided) around town at 5 p.m. sharp.
The route is intentionally long to accommodate social distancing. The cars will snake their way through several neighborhoods—Chicopee Dudley, Pulaski Heights, Boulevard, Normaltown, Cobbham, Downtown—and past a handful of businesses and public areas. Spectators are encouraged to check out the online map in advance and either watch from their lawns or plan ahead to snag a spot on a patio.
Drivers and spectators alike are encouraged to then head home to catch the Wild Rumpus Halloween TV Special, which airs at 7 p.m.
