Widespread Panic founding member and drummer Todd Nance passed away on the morning of Aug. 19 due to “sudden and unexpectedly severe complications of a chronic illness,” according to a statement released by his family and band. He was 57.
Nance’s decades-long tenure as the Southern jam band’s faithful drummer began in 1986 after guitarist Michael Houser, a high school friend of his, invited him to join singer John Bell and bassist Dave Schools for their first gig. Nance took a hiatus in 2014 and officially left after a string of shows in 2016, but continued to perform with the Interstellar Boys and Todd Nance & Friends. “For thirty years Todd was the engine of the Widespread Panic,” wrote the band.
No services are being planned at this time, but announcements will be made for how to best honor Nance’s illustrious life and career.
