Sully’s Steamers, a steamed bagel sandwich franchise that uses words like “oozy” to describe its products, is open at 255 E. Clayton St., which previously housed a frat bar. It does business mostly starting at 7 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m.
Down the block, Athens Wok is closed for good, a victim of the next-door hotel’s remodeling and expansion. Ahi Hibachi and Poke next door is still doing business and will continue to do so even after the hotel takes its space, moving to former Heery’s Too a couple of blocks down Clayton Street, near College Avenue.
Also on Clayton, coming to the former Bank of America building at Lumpkin Street, will be a location of Oak Steakhouse, an upscale chain out of Charleston, SC.
Tres Amigos, serving street tacos and margaritas until 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, is open at 350 E. Broad St., in the former Philanthropy Fresh.
Chipotle has been open for a while in the former Mayflower space on Broad Street.
Down the hill east of downtown, in The Mark, work has begun on its food hall complex, which will involve (you’ll be really surprised to hear this) a bubble tea place.
Head to Dougherty Street, and you’ll no longer find Lumberjaxe, the axe-throwing bar, which has closed.
Farther down, on Finley Street, a location of Meltwich, a Canadian grilled-cheese sandwich chain, is coming to the Rambler apartment building.
A little outside of downtown, Saucehouse is permanently closed, with its building up for sale, but Butter Bites Catering is open at 650 W. Broad St., in what was El Zarco.
Further west on Broad, Caribou Coffee is now open at the Hawthorne Avenue intersection, where Checker’s used to be.
7 Brew, another drive-through coffee chain, this one focused on “kindness,” is reportedly looking at a couple of locations, including the former World of Futons on West Broad and at the corner of Timothy Road and Atlanta Highway.
Pancho’s Tacos and Tequila, which bills itself as the best Mexican restaurant in Athens in a hubristic bit of SEO, but does have lengua, carnitas and campechano among its taco offerings, will be opening in what was Pulaski Heights BBQ at the Leathers Building.
ARTini’s Art Lounge, where patrons can drink while they paint (or paint while they drink), is closing its brick-and-mortar location on Prince Avenue, but will still be doing popups at local breweries.
