Residents of Farmer’s Exchange Lofts at the corner of East Broad and Oconee streets found their 23-year-old roommate unresponsive Wednesday morning, according to Hilda Sorrow, the public information officer for Athens-Clarke County police. Philip Hayes Carpenter was a University of Georgia student, police said.
An ambulance, ACC police and other investigators arrived on scene a little after noon on Wednesday, followed by the coroner. The coroner took a stretcher into the apartment around 1:30 p.m.
Cause of death and whether foul play was involved are yet to be determined. Sorrow said Wednesday that the incoming winter storm may affect how long the autopsy will take.
