An Athens homeless man who was beaten by another homeless man July 7 died on Monday, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Police said they found Richard Melvin Huff, 46, unconscious in in the Red and Black Package Store parking lot (located near the well-known Tent City homeless camp) at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, July 7.

Huff had severe injuries to his head and face; witnesses told police he was beaten by Wilkes Sanders Wolfe, 50.

Huff spent eight days in a hospital in “very serious condition” and succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

Charges against Wolfe have been upgraded from aggravated battery to murder. He is being held without bond at the Clarke County Jail.

Also on July 7, David Mack Collins, 22, was shot to death in the parking lot of Tivoli Apartments on the Eastside.

After several days of searching for a suspect, police, acting on a tip, arrested Santonio Hall, 20, of Hawthorne Avenue Extension, Saturday night at a Billups Street house and accused him of manslaughter, along with several other charges.

Police believe the shooting was a drug deal gone bad.
