UGA Presents, the University of Georgia’s professional performing arts series, has just released a spectacular schedule of programming for its upcoming season. Check out the official press release below for a full list of events and details on how to purchase tickets.
UGA Presents Announces 2023-24 Season
The coming UGA Presents season of international touring artists features Georgia’s own Indigo Girls in two concerts with the UGA Symphony Orchestra, Nickel Creek, singer-songwriter Patty Griffin, and classical piano legend Lang Lang. These star-studded performances are just a sample of the musicians, dancers, and theatrical artists coming to perform at the UGA Performing Arts Center (PAC) and the Fine Arts Theatre from September to May. (Full schedule below.)
“As the University of Georgia has continued to rise in stature as a leading institution of higher education, our staff and donors have worked to elevate our programs to match the moment,” says PAC Director and programmer Jeffrey Martin. “We seek to inspire our students, staff and faculty, uplift our community, and examine the issues facing our world through glorious and inquisitive music, theatre, and dance.
“Yes, this season we hope to do all of that. We will do it by exploring the sounds of America in many of its diverse musical forms, including bluegrass, Americana, gospel, and popular music. We will do it by presenting an unsurpassed roster of established and emerging classical musicians — showcasing the important role this music has played in our past and will continue to play well into our future. We will do it by welcoming 18 artists to our stages for the very first time and many returning favorites. We will do it by bringing you both the tried and true, the familiar, and the beloved while simultaneously asking you to try something new.”
A number of themes weave through the season, which has been designated the Year of the Piano in honor of the PAC’s new Hamburg Steinway concert grand. It will be played by such prominent pianists as jazz maestro Brad Mehldau and UGA Presents Artist in Focus Isata Kanneh-Mason, who will appear in both a solo recital and a concerto with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The UGA Presents commitment to diversity is evident in the Day of the Dead concert by the acclaimed Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández, and performances by Ballet Hispánico and Dance Theatre of Harlem. Africa is represented by the celebrated a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and The Book of Life, a theatrical work about hope in the wake of the Rwandan genocide.
