Today’s Office Jam! Bad Books: “Forest Whitaker”

Welcome to Today’s Office Jam!, a recurring feature where we share a tune someone in the Flagpole office is digging on. Today’s jam comes via assistant office manager Sydney Slotkin.

Sydney Slotkin’s Office Jam: Bad Books’ second album, II, born from the friendship of Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull, switches between slight ballads and crunchy emo with impressive flow, considering these guys’ respective individual successes. “Forest Whitaker” stands out as the album’s single, rising above for a moment, if only in tone, with whistles and video game guitars that almost obscure the fact that they’re singing about self-loathing.

Office Objections?: Nope. City editor Blake Aued didn’t bother to listen, but he likes Forest Whitaker (“He’s Ghost Dog!”). Production director Larry Tenner “always like[s] songs that have guitars that sound like kazoos.”
