Flagpole Premieres: Rag Bags, “Cannon Fodder”

Rag Bags

Out today, local alt-rock trio Rag Bags share “Cannon Fodder,” a track off of the new EP Buried Under Talk, which will be released Thursday, Nov. 4.

Anchored by brothers Tyler and Alex Nicholson on guitar/vocals and drums respectively, the trio also features Ian Hemerlein on bass. Though the brothers obviously have a longstanding history of their own, neither are strangers to collaborating with Hemerlein. Tyler recently made a guest vocal appearance on Sketches of Separation, the recent release by Hemerlein’s experimental noise punk duo named Kwazymoto. Alex, meanwhile, contributed drums to All of My Friends Are Sick, an album released last year under Saint Syzygy, Hemerlein’s other recording project.

“‘Cannon Fodder’ is basically about the different forms of tyranny that people fall prey to or unknowingly subjugate themselves to, and hopefully in the end we don’t become the tyrants ourselves,” says Tyler.

Like Kudos, the five-track debut that introduced the band back in October 2020, Buried Under Talk was recorded and mixed at Hemerlein’s home studio. Mastered by Jesse Mangum at The Glow Recording Studio, the EP stylistically cycles through a variety of genre influences ranging from indie rock to garage rock to singer-songwriter music.
