Café Society Review

It’s time for your yearly dose of Woody Allen. Other than the rare comic gems like Midnight in Paris or shifts in tone or genre like Match Point, every Allen movie feels pretty much the same. Allen channels classic Hollywood in this dramatic rom-com starring Eisenberg, who is Allen’s best proxy yet, and Kristen Stewart as the young woman for whom he pines. The cast—Steve Carell, Parker Posey, Blake Lively, Corey Stoll, Ken Stott and Jeannie Berlin—is acceptably strong, if not outstanding by Allen standards, and the period production design is top-notch. No surprises are in store, and nowadays, those unexpected moments and performances are all that elevates one Allen movie above the rest.
